ETEC 531 - Curriculum Issues in Cultural and Media Design
|
Artifact #1 - MP#1 GATTACA
This course required us to make a media production based on a topic of study from the course. Keeping both with my theme of choosing scientific topics, and my newfound confidence using new technologies, I decided to create a movie using Windows Movie Maker. This being my first experience using this program, I was generally happy with my product. As I reflect on it now there are a few ways that it could be improved; there are issues with the sound, I use some of the video footage twice, and the youtube video continues for a full minute after my video stops. However the message itself I still find interesting and I remember being quite proud of it. I think it achieved my original goal of becoming more confident with using technologies such as Windows Movie Maker in my classroom. |
Artifact #2 - MP#2 Biomimcry
This video on Biomimicry represents my second attempt at creating a video using Windows Movie Maker so I felt it would make a good contrast to Artifact #1. While there are still some issues with sound balance, the transition and timing of slides is much more effective. Biomimicry is something I have started including in my Science 10 lessons in recent years, and now after "rediscovering" this video, it is one that I will use in my classroom. |

Final Reflections for ETEC 531
While I have switched to using a Mac and will likely not use Windows Movie Maker anytime soon, the experience gained in this course has given me the skills required to creating original media pieces in my classroom. The knowledge gained has also allowed me to support my students as they use these technologies for their own assignments. One particular assignment comes to mind in which I charge students with the task of creating an analogy for the virus life cycle. Prior to the MET program, I only gave students low tech options for their presentations (story book, comic book, poem etc), however I now also give them the option of creating a digital presentation. While many students stick with the story books, I usually have a couple of students in each class that choose to create a video. Having the experience from ETEC 531, I am able to better assist with the planning, filming and editing of their own media productions.
